TIPS FOR HIRING A PROFESSIONAL TREE SERVICE

With so many companies offering tree services it can be difficult to find the right one. Unqualified companies may not have sufficient insurance or the proper knowledge, or equipment to carry out the tree services needed. Finding a tree removal company with certified arborists is the best place to start. Here are some tips you can use when searching for a qualified arborist.

  • First and foremost ask if they can provide a current arborist license?

An arborist license is required for any professional to install cabling or bracing, diagnose and evaluate conditions of trees, fell or cut down trees in developed areas, or require pruning or trimming off the ground.

  • Can they provide a current certificate of insurance?

In Maine, all licensed arborists are required to sign an affidavit that states they will not perform arboriculture work without adequate insurance. This means any licensed arborist should provide proof of having general liability insurance that is at least $150,000 per occurrence and $300,000 general aggregate. Proper insurance is one of the top questions you should ask.

  • Can they provide references?

Being able to hear from previous customers can give you a better understanding of what kind of work to expect.

  • Get a detailed estimate from more than one company.

Compare estimates amongst several professional companies. Look for the best combination of cost, the scope of work, and the length of time needed to complete the job. Ultimately the health or maintenance of your trees is in the tree professional’s hands so a knowledgeable and professional business is best.

Questions to ask when getting an estimate:

  • How do they minimize potential damage to your property? A licensed professional will be able to explain all the precautions taken while doing the job to minimize any damage.

  • What equipment will they be using?  Do they have all the necessary equipment to complete the job? Do they have proper protective gear, such as earplugs, glasses, gloves, and hard hats?

  • Will they be using climbing spikes?  Unless the tree is being removed a conscientious arborist will never use climbing spikes as it causes unhealthy wounds and can introduce detrimental insects to an otherwise healthy tree.
